While other radio stations are wheeling out Bing Crosby, Michael Bolton and Destiny’s Child to sing you pristine versions of the all-time great holiday songs, 88.5 FM and Flee are bringing you songs that only the kids on Santa’s naughty list are listening to. From songs performed using a variety of untraditional instruments like power tools and rubber bands to songs “I want an alien for Christmas” and “Another Christmas beer”, that have failed in their attempt to become holiday classics, Flee has assembled three hours of music that you won’t hear from carolers outside your window. In fact your neighbors may request that you close your windows while listening to this show.
Special this year is a one hour radio special recorded by Aimee Mann as guest DJ playing her favorite holiday songs in an exclusive for WMNF.
Other artists doing originals or covers include: Sufjan Stevens, Bright Eyes, Apples in Stereo, Bootsy Collins, Johnny Cash and Tom Lehrer.
Songs include: Santa cam on a Nuclear Missile, iPod Xmas and (I’m spending) Hanukkah in Santa Monica.
Smells Like Santa Spirit is a cousin to The Bad Songs series is and is a special program that is part of the weekly radio show the Sonic Detour. The overall purpose of Sonic Detour is to present newly released music of many different genres that have limited mainstream media outlets—along with favorite songs from years past. Sonic Detour tries to recreate the early days of freeform broadcasting before corporate interests divvied up the radio dial into narrow formats. Music heard on Sonic Detour include, but is not limits to, Alternative, Ska, Drum and Bass, Lounge, Trip Hop, Americana, Dub, Anti-Folk, Trance, Lo-Fi, Power Pop, Punk, Surf, Global Dance beats, Hip Hop, Experimental, Avant-Jazz, Ambient, Folk, Comedy, 60’s, 70’s 80’s rock/alternative, Bluegrass, Jazz, Jungle, Bhangra, Electronic, House and Garage.
