I recently had the enormous pleasure of seeing Lloyd Goldstein’s first two solo performances, emerged from a cocoon of 21 years in the Florida Orchestra, Lloyd has recently blossomed into a Music Practitioner (certified through the Music for Healing and Transition Program ) and now plays music for patients at the Moffit Caner Center. He has been deeply inspired after taking up yoga practice a few years ago, while at first taken up to heal his back pains from playing in the orchestra (without the need of a chiropractor for the rest of his life), his yoga practice did much more than heal his back and has brought a new spiritual awaking that he recently had the pleasure of sharing with a large audience at his first two solo performances. The yoga has directly inspired writings, paintings and eventually music compositions. Lloyd also started teaching yoga last year at the TreeHouse Yoga Center in Tampa.
Lloyd has just finished compiling his yoga inspired writings and paintings (after much work of the past few years) into a book and is currently working on publishing. The book is entitled Inside Yoga: Inside Yoga: First Years’ Journey. Layouts from the book were on display at both concerts, they were also matted and for sale at the second concert which was held at Mirta’s Gallery.
The recent concerts were made up of two sets, in the first one Lloyd went though his basic yoga practice which involved reading his yoga inspired poetry and writings with a head set (including a reading done in head-stand posture) and between poses plays his yoga inspired compositions with his “Big ol’ Singing Tree” (his recently named 200 year old upright bass). The set is introspective and goes though a cycle of emotions of beauty, joy, unsureness, discontent and breaks though in the end by laughing and “being the lamp,” burning though all physical, mental and spiritual blockage.
The second set was all music and contained a variety of influences and friends. The composition choices included a few pieces by Lloyd’s teacher Francois Rabbath, a few “standards” that are uplifting and bring fond memories to patients, and ending off with a few selections by Reinhold Gliere for bass and viola played with master violist Dr. Libor Ondras. The first concert, held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in North Tampa, showed Lloyd doing a lot of collaborative work, with help from some people at Moffitt, and other friends: there were duets on a variety of instruments, interpretive dancing, and live painting. The second set of the second concert, held at Mirta’s Gallery, was a stripped down and refined set, showing Lloyd working with guitarist Ryan Pate and Dr. Libor Ondras again, and exploring more territory with his renditions of his teacher’s pieces.
The second concert, held at the back room of Mirta’s Gallery in Hyde Park, spoke even more to me. I think the more intimate atmosphere worked well for the music and made it easier to see the yoga poses. The show was hot, inspired and had me hanging on every word and note. Lloyd’s playing and speaking made consciousness of being in the moment as natural as being is.
Both concerts were packed to capacity and I encourage you to get out and see Lloyd next time he performs live. I would especially encourage young adults (an age category that I fall in) as I believe my peers would enjoy and benefit from the experience. I only mention this because I was one of the only young adults at both concerts, which are joyous events not to be missed by anyone. Check Lloyd’s concert section for details on upcoming shows.
Lloyd Goldstein and Ryan Pate will be performing on WMNFs “Live Music Showcase on Friday, June 16th from 9am till 10 am. WMNF is Tampa Bay’s award winning community radio station and can be found on the FM dial at 88.5 (read more about it at the concert section of Lloyd’s website).
I recently had the pleasure of designing Lloyd’s website, working with lots of beautiful content. I encourage you to read his reflections on the book, concerts, MHTP and yoga at http://lloydgoldstein.com.
