The Some Me of Beauty Project is an artistic self-expression/discovery initiative through the use of paint on canvas.
The artists are 6 to 16 year-old-children of the Interbay Boys & Girls Club whose diverse backgrounds have allowed them to create unique paintings reflecting what they see and feel when looking into the mirror.
This project’s goal was to encourage children to express their unique beauty on canvas. As a part of the project, they participated in discussions on positive body images and self-esteem.
During the 4-week project, children used acrylic and canvas to show what they felt was uniquely beautiful about them. There were discussions about being oneself and not succumbing to peer pressure; that there is both internal and external beauty; and that our differences themselves make everyone beautiful.
This project was inspired from a need to have children recognize that the person staring back at them in the mirror is a beautiful and talented individual. Most often, the question asked of the children is, “What can you do that makes you special?” or “What can you do to make yourself beautiful?”
The Some Me of Beauty project says, “You already are!”
