Student of Art History Kris-Derek Hechevarria is organizing an art show entitled Openings, the premise which is that the viewer must somehow physically open each piece.
The idea came about while he was visiting a major contemporary art fair. There were many pieces that seem to require the viewer’s touch, but he was never sure which pieces were supposed to be interactive or not. This created a desire to touch every piece even more. He strove to organize a show in which each artist, throughout the process of making each piece, must consider the viewer as an active piece of the art. He firmly believes that without the viewer there is no art.
One such piece by the curator of the show and collaborative partner Matthew Schlagbaum has the viewers opening bars of chocolate, chewing them and spitting onto a canvas. Another contributing artist Allison Table, features pieces from her clothing line South Scout as well as a sewing machine made entirely of Legos. South Scout’s designer invites you to “see where her inspiration comes from” while playing with, destroying and eating the art.
The curator is trying to create an environment that is “fun and welcoming, not stuffy like other art shows.” The theme of the show will continue on to the food at the reception, which will include fortune cookies, individually wrapped snack cakes and a cookie jar. | Artists involved order list by : First NameLast Name
