underCURRENT/overVIEW 8, is a showcase of contemporary art in Florida that features the work of 30 artists from throughout the state. This special exhibition includes 42 works of art ranging from paintings, drawings, and sculpture to video, installation art, and photography.

When the Tampa Museum of Art organized its first underCURRENT/overVIEW exhibition in 1997, the artistic community of Tampa Bay responded enthusiastically. The eighth edition of underCURRENT/overVIEW will demonstrate the museum?s desire to continually evolve the exhibition?s direction and impact. The exhibition continues to showcase significant art created within the last five years, but now features artists living and working within the entire state of Florida. Such a broad selection provides an opportunity to bring together contemporary art of great quality, but also results in an exhibition that represents the variety of media, subject matter and artistic approaches that thrive in Florida.

Many of the works featured in the exhibition are the products of full-time artists, art teachers and art students. The show provides an opportunity for visitors to see the work of those artists who will be inspiring future generations of artists. This broad, state-wide survey shows artists? interest in a wide array of topics. Work in the exhibition demonstrates interest in social issues, nature, pattern and design. Each underCURRENT/overVIEW exhibition always presents great diversity of art, ideas and intent, and reflects the depth and richness of our state.

underCURRENT/overVIEW 8 remains a survey look at contemporary art being produced in Florida , not a thematic exhibition. ?The exhibition series? title plays upon the notion of artists living and working close to the waters of Tampa Bay , the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean while recognizing that contemporary trends in art are often elusive, flowing, and hard to plot,? says Elaine D. Gustafson, director of exhibitions & collections and curator of Contemporary Art. ?Each work featured in underCURRENT/overVIEW 8 stands on its own, yet together makes up an exciting presentation of art of the 21st century in Florida . Remaining constant are the exhibition?s goals: to support Florida artists by presenting their work in a professional museum environment, to introduce the general public to the rich art being made in the state, and to raise awareness of the creative excellence of Florida artists.?

A call for entries/prospectus was sent out last fall to individuals, universities, galleries, art councils, newspapers, museums, and arts centers. The exhibition was selected by Dr. Jeffrey Grove, The Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta . Thirty artists were selected from 278 portfolios reviewed. A series of lectures, gallery talks, and panel discussions will be organized by the museum in conjunction with the exhibition.

The exhibition is sponsored by Tampa Digital Studios, Amscot Financial, Inc., TECO Energy, Inc., and Sara and Mort Richter.
